The Alex Scribe

SCRIBE

Today in class we defined expression and equation and we also learned how to solve algebraic addition and subtraction questions by balancing.

An expression is a question with a variable.

An equation is a question with an equal sign.

E.G.1 X+5=10

You have to balance it.
If it's addition you turn it to a negative.
Then you add the negative to the end of the 10.
Forget the positive and negative 5's.
Focus on the question at the end.

X+5=10-5
-5

10-5=X
X=5

E.G.2 X-5=10

You have to balance it again.
Turn the negative to positive.
Add the positive 5 to the end.
Forget everything except the end.

X-5=10+5
+5

10+5=X
X=15
