Growing Post 2 - 3LL3iRoN


1. This shape is a square that has side lengths of 5 cm. This shape represents 5/6 of a total. Use this square to show what the fraction 9/5. You can use diagrams, words, symbols to show your understanding.(copy the picture into your post and change it as you see fit!!)



2. What happens when you multiply fractions? Use both a numerical and pictorial example to show our understanding of this concept.

MULTIPLYING FRACTIONS

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

  • The product will be less than what you started with.
  • multiply the numerator to numerator then multiply the denominator to the denominator
  • All whole numbers have only 1 part so they are written as 4/1 or 326/1
  • when multiplying mixed number change all mixed numbers into improper then multiply

Example:

3/4 x 4/5 = 12/ 20 or 3/5

Steps:

  1. Multiply the numerator to numerator--> 3 x 4 = 12
  2. Multiply denominator to denominator --> 4 x 5 = 20
  3. change to lowest term if possible; if improper change to mixed number--> 12/20 or 3/5

MIXED NUMBER EXAMPLE:

3 1/2 x 5/6= 35/ 12 or 2 11/12

Steps :

  1. change to improper --> 3 1/2 = 7/2
  2. multiply --> 7/2 and 5/6 = 35/ 12 ; numerator to numerator; denominator to denominator
  3. change it to mixed number again and in lowest term if possible -->35/12 or 2 11/12

DIVIDING FRACTIONS


" Yours is not to reason why? Just invert and multiply"

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

  • How many groups of _ are in_?
  • Invert the second number
  • Reciprocal- two numbers whose product is 1; example: 1/2 x 2/1 = 2/2 or 1
  • To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal
  • write the mixed numbers as improper fractions, then divide
  • Change to lowest term or mixed number if possible

Examples:

2/3 ÷ 1/5

Steps:

  1. Invert or find the reciprocal of the second fraction --> 1/5 turns to 5/1
  2. Change division to multiplication--> 2/3 x 5/1
  3. Multiply--> 2/3 x 5/1= 10/ 1; numerator to numerator; denominator to denominator
  4. Change to mixed number or lowest term if possible--> 10/1 or 1

Dividing with mixed numbers:

3 1/2 ÷ 1 2/3

Steps:

  1. Change fractions to improper fractions -- > 7/2 ÷ 5/3
  2. Invert or find the reciprocal of the second fraction--> 5/3 turns to 3/5
  3. Change division to multiplication--> 7/2 x 3/5
  4. Multiply--> 7/2 x 3/5= 21/10
  5. Change to mixed number again and change it to lowest term if possible--> 21/ 10 or 2 1/10

6. Choose 4 peoples post which deserve to be in a Growing Post Hall of Fame. You must choose 1 from each class. Give a brief description of why you chose that person's blog to highlight. Create a link to that person's post.

8-17--> Myla she did her post and explain her answers. Her answer is easy to understand. She did a very great visuals.

8-16--> Helen she did a very nice work on her post . She has a colourful post. She did a very nice explainations

8-41--> Jenny coz she explain her work and answer the qeustion that is being ask. She has a pretty nice illustrations

8-73--> Ingrid coz she did a very good job on her growing post. There's an animation posts. She answer all the question properly. Guess she really deserve to have her post be posted in the growing post hall of fame.

7. Create a word problem that involves fractions. The word problem should have a picture in it ( a garden with 4 equal parts etc.). Answer someone elses word problem with a link back to the origional question.

Henry bought 234 marbles at the Mini Store and put it in his bag. On his way to Jerry's house he didn't notice that 4/7 of his marbles were gone. When he arrived at Jerry house how many marbles were left?
