Today we went in 44 and we learned about subtracting fractions... these are the notes that we took.

Subtracting Fractions

subtracting fractions means you must need to create the same size parts or COMMON DENOMINATORS.

(there is an image for this. its attached. i think)

OOPS I NEED TO BORROW

1 1/2 - 3/4 OPTION 1 *convert to improper fraction

*make into common denominator

*subtract

3/2 - 3/4

6/4 - 3/4 = 3/4

1 1/2 (multiply the denominator by the whole number) 2 x 1 = 2 + 1 = 3/2

3 4/5 - 1 9/10

19/5 - 19/10 = 38/10 - 19/10 = 1 9/10<-- must make mixed number OPTION 2 4 4/7 - 1 2/3 Find equivalent fractions *use a whole number to make the fraction large enough to work 4 12/21 - 1 14/21 3 + 21/21 + 12/21 - 1 14/21 3 33/21 - 1 14/21 = 2 17/21 7 1/5 - 1 1/2 7 7/10 - 1 5/10 6 12/10 - 1 5/10 = 5 7/10 OR 36/5 - 3/2 72/10 - 15/10 = 57/10 = 5 7/10
